Understanding Africa Today

ARI encourages debate and challenges received wisdom in and about Africa

ARI aims to promote an informed and nuanced understanding of Africa. Our work draws on the expertise and experience of leading thinkers and practitioners from across the continent. Our priority is to share this as widely as possible within and outside Africa. We pay particular attention to examples of good practice and innovation.

About Us

Independent and open to all

ARI was founded in 2007 as a resolutely independent, privately funded think-tank. All our publications, insights and events are freely accessible to anyone with an interest in Africa. We have always welcomed and appreciated the participation, suggestions and input of diverse supporters.

Disseminating knowledge

We have no pre-established ‘positions’ ourselves, a unique approach. Our interest is in sharing the knowledge or experience of others as widely as possible to encourage debate or provide constructive pointers. Publication authors and advisers with whom we collaborate are not remunerated for their contribution, nor do we ever receive payment for our input.

Themes over locations

When selecting topics to explore our focus is more thematic than country specific, and frequently institutional. However examination of land issues, the constitution, election management, municipal financing or agricultural export standards in one country usually resonates in other settings as well. Most publications have enduring relevance rather than being time-sensitive.

The ARI community

Our audience is broad, from government ministers to students to diaspora. A publication might be of particular interest to politicians, diplomats, lawyers or tax administrators around Africa, or to Africa-focused external specialists, but we always aim to render complexity comprehensible and to minimise technical jargon. Clarity is of paramount importance to us.
